    Guest Room Reveal

    I feel the need to keep this post short and sweet. Perhaps it’s because that’s how this design feels. Or perhaps it's a subconscious attempt to make up for the time I let drag with putting this room together… Either way - here’s our Guest Room recap!  
    After having guests and parents sleep on a pull out Ikea sofa for years, having a Guest Room felt like a true dream when we moved into our home. This room is on the main level right next to the bathroom, almost in its own “wing” of our very non-open-concept home. It was an odd ball out from the beginning, being the only room with peachy walls and brown trim instead of white. I wanted to take the opportunity to make this room more saturated and feel different than our other neutral (read: white) rooms. Here is a shot of the room when we moved in along with a peek at my original mood board. I was thinking I’d choose a deep taupe wall color and layer in with charcoals and blues. 

    However, after a late night Pinterest deep dive, I found this image and fell in love with the deep dusty blue.

    I selected Sherwin Williams "Software" soon after and decided to paint the walls and trim all one color. I love the look, and being 8 months pregnant at the time made that decision even easier. The brass door knobs and side table pop so beautifully against the deep blue. So much so that I'm planning to replace the light switch with a brass plate next!

     

    Any new homeowner knows there are endless projects to spend money on, so we needed to be very cost-conscious with the furniture. We found the bed frame on Facebook Marketplace and mounted a previously owned side table in the corner. We stayed light and soft with the bedding, pairing a Casaluna quilt, House of Verna linen pillow, and hand-sewn lumbar made with fabric left over from a design project. 

    And honestly, this was all the room held for many months! Fast forward to a few months ago when my aunt and uncle came over for a visit and brought along multiple paintings from my Grandma (Verna herself!) and my Great Grandma, Myrtle. This landscape painting was done by Myrtle in 1913 when she was just a teenager. I jumped at the offer to keep it. It is even more beautiful in person and I'm left in awe of her skill at such a young age! 

    I knew our Guest Room was the perfect home for this painting. It affirmed what the wall color had suggested months before: we were going moody and textural. That little vision lit a fire in me to finish the space, and we hit Facebook Marketplace again and scored a petite vintage dresser for $40. The finishing touches came together with more thrifting, some DIY, and a touch of retail.
    I tried my hand at refinishing a thrifted lamp base for an aged pottery look, and paired it with a thrifted woven shade. I added my favorite candle from our shop, a vintage green vase, an Amana wool blanket, and a carafe/cup mug set I found at a local shop that aligned with my original inspo. The curtains and brass rods were repurposed from our last apartment, and the vintage kids chair in the corner was a treasure my mom picked up from the curb while she was visiting and on a walk! What can I say, it runs in the blood. 


    Now when I walk in this room, it feels so special because of its blend: new, layered with vintage, repurposed and created. I know this formula doesn't work for every space. It takes more time and more work. But what a satisfying and intimate result when you can afford that time and thought. Alright, now we need some more guests!
